Physician leaders understand their accountabilities. Workforce requirements are connected to service planning. Contracts align with approved funding and expected deliverables. Credentialing and privileging support patient safety. Issues involving conduct, performance or policy move through defined processes. Medical Staff leaders and operational leaders understand how their responsibilities intersect.

When that operating system is weak, the symptoms appear everywhere. Recruitment occurs without a clear workforce plan. Contracts accumulate without effective management or oversight. Decision rights become unclear. Physician leaders carry accountability without sufficient authority. Administrative processes grow around problems rather than solving them. Issues move between departments because no one is quite sure who owns them.

What leaders should consider

Does your organization or health authority continue to struggle with accountability and service delivery challenges?

Is your Medical Affairs Office considered to be “admin” and maybe part of the problem?

The practical takeaway

A strong Medical Affairs function needs more than efficient administration. It requires clear governance, reliable data, defined accountabilities, disciplined stewardship, effective physician leadership and processes that connect strategy to operational reality.

A way forward

The better question to ask yourself is “Does our Medical Affairs operating system give the organization and its physicians the structure they need to deliver safe, accountable and sustainable care?”

Cogentis Health Group can help diagnose, design, decide and deliver.

Astrid Levelt
Founder and Principal, Cogentis Health Group

The issue Medical Affairs offices are often perceived as holding a collection of administrative functions: credentialing, privileging, physician contracts, Medical Staff appointments, complaints, Medical Staff meetings and recruitment.
